Connecticut License Guide
How to Get Your Connecticut Real Estate License
A clear, step-by-step guide from prelicense course to active license — and how SB School of Real Estate fits into every stage.
Earning your Connecticut real estate salesperson license is a straightforward process when you know the steps. Connecticut requires 60 hours of approved prelicense education, a passing score on the state exam, a background check, and sponsorship by a licensed broker. From start to finish, most students complete the process in two to three months.
Below is everything you need to know — including what the prelicense course covers, how to prepare for the state exam, and how SB School of Real Estate supports you at every stage.
- Step 01
Complete 60 Hours of Approved Prelicense Education
Connecticut law requires all salesperson license applicants to complete a 60-hour Principles and Practices of Real Estate course approved by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). The course must be completed before you are eligible to sit for the state exam. SB School of Real Estate (DCP School Approval #2297) delivers this course entirely via live Zoom — a real interactive classroom with your instructor and classmates, not pre-recorded videos.
- Step 02
What the Prelicense Course Covers
The 60-hour curriculum covers all topics required by Connecticut DCP, including: real estate brokerage and agency relationships, listing agreements and buyer representation, ownership of real estate and legal descriptions, contracts, liens, and transfer of title, Connecticut real estate license law and DCP regulations, fair housing and anti-discrimination law, real estate finance and mortgages, property valuation and appraisal concepts, and landlord-tenant law. SB School's course is taught over five weeks — Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 10:00 PM ET — so working adults can earn their license without leaving their current job.
- Step 03
Pass the Connecticut Real Estate Salesperson Exam
After completing your prelicense course, you will sit for the Connecticut Real Estate Salesperson Examination administered by PSI Exams. The exam has two portions: a national portion covering general real estate principles and a state-specific portion covering Connecticut law and practice. You must pass both portions. SB School's curriculum is built around exam readiness — instructors Sherina Baker and Andrea Thomas are licensed Connecticut real estate professionals who know exactly what the state exam tests and teach to it directly.
- Step 04
Submit Your License Application to Connecticut DCP
Once you have passed both portions of the state exam, you will submit a salesperson license application to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. The application requires your exam score report, proof of completed prelicense education, a background check (fingerprinting through IdentoGO), and the application fee. Connecticut DCP processes applications on a rolling basis; most applicants receive their license within two to four weeks of a complete submission.
- Step 05
Affiliate with a Licensed Connecticut Broker
A Connecticut real estate salesperson license is only active when affiliated with a licensed broker. Before or shortly after submitting your application, you will need to find a sponsoring broker. Your broker will co-sign your license application and you will work under their supervision as you begin your real estate career. SB School instructors are happy to discuss what to look for in a sponsoring broker and how to evaluate your options.
